Watermark paper is a special processing paper from ancient China, named for its water wave-like texture on the surface, also known as ‘flower curtain paper’. Its production techniques mainly include two methods: one is to weave textures or patterns with thread on the papermaking screen, allowing the pulp to deposit and form a dark pattern; the other is to press the paper surface with a wooden mold carved with patterns. The physical evidence of the ‘Tongnian Letter’ by Li Jianzhong of the Northern Song Dynasty, which used mulberry bark watermarked flower paper, proves that China had mastered the mature production technology at least by the tenth century, earlier than similar products in Europe. The lines or patterns formed by special processes become visible when viewed against the light, considered a creative breakthrough by ancient craftsmen in enhancing the aesthetic value of paper.
